how the light gets in at the Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University brings together an international group of 58 artists and artist teams and collectives, representing 29 countries of birth and residence. Their work engages with themes of migration, immigration, displacement, and exile, across mediums such as drawing, photography, painting, sculpture, and video.
Fiamma Montezemolo’s 2012 single-channel digital video Traces (Rastros), a video essay about the U.S.-Mexico border and its fences, is on view in this exhibition. Throughout its 20-minute duration, Traces‘ mood alternates between poetic and ethnographic. Montezemolo (b. 1971) is an artist, cultural anthropologist, and established scholar in border studies.
