Re-envisioning the Virgin Mary: Colonial Painting from South America, an exhibition at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, features eight paintings on loan from one of the country’s most distinguished collections of colonial South American art, the Carl & Marilynn Thoma Collection, Chicago. Created in what are now the countries of Peru and Bolivia, the paintings represent devotions to Mary that arose within that region as early as the sixteenth century.
