Art of the Spanish Americas

Organized by 2019-20 Marilynn Thoma Fellows Katherine Moore McAllen and Verónica Muñoz-Nájar, the upcoming symposium Congreso de Arte Virreinal: El Futuro del Arte del Pasado seeks to trace the continuum and disruptions of visual characteristics throughout viceregal art history. This symposium is designed to debate, explore, and evaluate the state of visual and material culture produced in colonial Latin America.

Keynote speakers Luisa Elena Alcalá (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), Thomas B.F. Cummins (Harvard University), and Hiroshige Okada (Osaka University) will discuss their analytical approaches and methodologies in studying viceregal art and its history. Topics to be discussed include collecting these arts, navigating syncretism throughout the period, characteristics of decorative arts, the identity of the viceregal artist, materiality and science, and how viceregal sources are used in neo-baroque art projects. Admission will be free and open to the public.

This symposium will be held from July 18-19, 2019 at Centro Cultural Ccori Wasi in Lima, Peru.
