On loan to the Phoenix Art Museum are Bruce Conner’s 1959-67 and 1959-67/1996 films LOOKING FOR MUSHROOMS.
Travelogue films documenting a psychedelic “trip” expresses the hallucinatory, mind-bending consciousness of the 1960s. Combining footage of San Francisco street views with footage taken from a series of scenes from mushroom-hunting excursions through rural Mexico, the short version is paired with The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” (1966) and the long version is paired with Terry Riley’s “Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band” (1968).
