Tech and the West Symposium, a partnership with the Santa Fe Opera

The Thoma Foundation is pleased to partner with the Santa Fe Opera on Tech and the West, a two-day symposium held July 21-22, and presented as part of the upcoming world premiere of The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs.

Many minds will come together for Tech and the West to facilitate and participate in discussions – composers, scientists, designers, directors, historians, and lecturers, among others. On Saturday, July 22, artists from the Thoma Foundation collection, Beryl Korot and Steina Vasulka, will be in dialogue with curator and noted scholar of media arts, John Hanhardt, to discuss the ways these artists have innovated applications for “legacy” technologies within the context of contemporary art history. Hanhardt will open the dialogue focusing on significant early video works, Dachau 1974 by Korot and Violin Power, 1970-1978 by Vasulka, marking their origins as visionary artists who are known for adapting technology to create new media-based perceptual experiences. Both of these historic artworks are currently on view at the Foundation’s exhibition space, Art House, located on 231 Delgado St. in Santa Fe.

In addition to the Thoma Foundation, Tech and the West programming is being presented in association with several other organizations, that contribute to the diversity of New Mexico’s thinkers: Los Alamos Historical Society, New Mexico History Museum, Santa Fe Institute, Chatter, Cinematheque at Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe, Patina Gallery, and the Lensic Performing Arts Center.
